Subchapter 2

Near the village center, not far from the quietly burning bonfire, a stampede of swiftly moving bodies bolted from their predators toward the center of the village and the safety of their homes. Amid the scuffle, a voice rang out deep and clear. “Lenanna... Lenanna!” It was Deniem. Lenanna trained with this young male warrior and knew him well. He was a few years older, had passed his trials, and was received into full Warrior status by the others. He exuded a demeanor of confidence bordering on cockiness that Lenanna lacked.

“We’re being attacked from both gates. Warriors are forming offensive forces to drive out the enemy. We need you. Rendezvous ... center village. Hey! Where’s your partner?” He dodged a flying spear quickly and looked over in Lenanna’s direction as she screamed back.

“But wait!” Lenanna interjected.

“I don’t have time to explain.” Deniem reasoned harshly. Then he raised his shield just in time to catch a deadly arrow intended for the being to his right. The wary victim clutched her little ones tightly and fled, shrieking in horror.

“Hurry! Get your partner Lenanna! Center village... Got it?” The Warrior yelled back over the crowd.

“My partner is.... I’ll be there.” She retorted loudly as she struggled to hurdle after him through the tangled masses of frightened villagers. ‘Raheese!’ She seethed under her breath. ‘If you have ruined my chances, this will be the last screw-up of your pathetic life!’ She pulled her sword and began angrily beating back the advancing intruders along her way. While Lenanna fought toward her fellow Warriors near the village’s core, a frantic female pushed through against the crowd. She was heading away from the safety of the dwellings.

“Avianne. Come back!” She cried above the noise of the mob. In the sea of disaster around her, the contrast of her tear-streaked face wrought with horror and her long formal gown made her emerge with distinctive quality. Even in distress, she shone with an ethereal beauty, though her ceremonial garment had torn in several places, with pieces of its ornate design carelessly ripped away. The soiled hem of her beautiful dress dragged her to the ground with each labored movement she made against the traffic flow. She continued to scan the stampeding herd of bodies as she screamed her son’s name until, at last, she saw Avianne in the distance, only yards away from a large mass of invading strangers. By his stance, Avianne appeared to mimic the Warriors he had seen in the Festival War Games. He was holding a makeshift spear fashioned from a thin sapling about a foot taller than his small stature. One sad lone leaf still dangled near its tip. Completely unaware of the danger before him, he forced the crooked green branch out in front of him in defiance.

“I won’t let you hurt my family.” He growled, shaking the tip of the makeshift spear toward the vengeful-looking outcasts.

“No, Avianne! Somebody, help me... my baby!” His mother yelled out as she pushed harder to get to him.
